First joke video

second joke video

Compare and Contrast Essay

In our two short videos, there are both contrast and affinity. Our video is basically following the same joke. The story line is the same, but by editing and directing in different way, they have differences.

The line is different in two videos. We have more lines in the first video. For example the purple background of the “dad”, all the lines are towards the dad to make “dad” more stand out. And also the very beginning of the first video when “dad ”sit on the sofa, all the lines are point to him. In addition, we also have followed the rule of thirds, which we talked in class a few weeks before. “Dad” is the point of interests, so he is a little bit left wards in the screen. In the second video, we also add lines but it is simpler than the first video. Take “mom” as an example too, when she worked in the kitchen, the only visual line we can current see is the lines of the board. These two differences happened because the different sources we had during filming.

In the first video, we give the “Dad” a hat in order to create a shape, which is different from the kid. This is in purpose to show the conflict between different shapes. In the second video we also did this. The “Mother” is in a circle, and the Kid is a triangle.

The rhythm in these two videos is also different. In the first video, the rhythm is smooth. By starting with a peace and soft music, the rhythm is slow and smooth. But in the second video, the rhythm is fast. Because the piano music our editor added in the video is in a fast and happy speed. Even the second one is a silence movie. We can still get the joke, because it’s fast and happy rhythm.

Our second video has subtext to explain the story. The first one we just directly add voice in it to help audience understanding the video.

original picture

Reformed by Paula

This picture from Salvador Dali is a metaphor of power and money.

Those elephants charring the golden sits and tower. It looks like a powerful person going out. The gold is shining and light. In there, the artist compares and contrasts the gold with those elephants. When we look at the elephants, they have very very thin legs, and their body is in dark black color that makes us cannot see them very clearly. Their thin legs and small body (the dark color makes them look small.) cannot carry the heavy gold, it’s about to fall. The artist using many subtext here.
In the original picture, the first thing we will notice is the terrified horse, because of the Rules of Thirds. Then we will notice the gold, then elephants and at last we will see elephants’ thin legs. The horse is kind of telling the theme of the picture, which are anger, conflict, and scare. The angry, conflict and scare is from the gold. We want know why, then we see the elephants, dark and old, and the most important is they have very thin legs. After I reformed the picture, it changed. According to the rules of third, now we are focus on the man. We first see the cross in his hand. And then some falling legs in the right. The man seems want defended himself, so he won’t hurt by those large body.

The conflict also shows in the shape. The golden products are all in a triangle shape. Compare to the naked man who is holding a cross, is in a rectangle. The conflict is clearer. Look at the lines in this picture, most of them are diagonal. But there are lines goes to a totally different direction. This frame shows a contrast direction of the lines. In my reformed picture, lines are diagonal too, they are toward the top left corner. And the man is below the horizon line which means he is very close to us.

The original picture is XWS (extremely wide shot), it has people in the location. The picture I reformed is WS. It contain the man’s who body. And it could also kind of two shot, even those legs are not human beings, this shot contain 2 elements.

In my picture, the elephant is higher than the man, but it is still small and far away from us. The man in our eyes is bigger. I think his defense or fight will success.

4A blog assignment

4A blog assignment
Link to the article "Brainwashed"

In Seth Godin’s writing, “Brainwashed”, the Acknowledge the Lizard telling us the main reason why we are afraid to make arts. The main reason is we don’t want to be laughed at. Therefore we don’t want to dislike others. Being difference makes us fear. We must ignore this feeling, stop care too much about other’s laughing.

The last layer is Learn. In short, learning is never stopping. We learn everyday from different people and experiences. Learning something everyday, and challenging us.

Today my friend and I were talking about the blog assignment, which we both don’t finish yet. When we mentioned the audio assignment, she said she don’t want to do it in library, because it makes her feel uncomfortable. I am totally agreed with her. I think it’s because we are afraid of being laughed at by others, even most times they don’t really care. Every time we finished the lab project, we have to post it online, I thought it’s also an acknowledging the lizard, because our workings is going to be evaluating by our classmates and even strangers. I actually think it’s a pretty good way to challenge myself. I was thinking if we post our working on Youtube, and let more people evaluating the works may challenging us a lot more.

Doing every blog assignment is not only homework but is always a process of learning. We are not only learning and understanding words, which taught in class, but also learning other things beside our course. For example, when I am working on the first blog, even I am very familiar with the animator, Hayao Miyazaki, but I actually never considered how does his animation affect me and educated me. His animations have many different aspects for me to learn. Therefore writing a blog assignment is also a good way to learning things beside class. For suggestion, maybe we can write anything we want in the blog every week. It can be a song we sing, music we play, or even a short animation we made. That might be helpful to be more creative.
